What is a podcast?

According to Wikipedia, “podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video programs, over the Internet using RSS syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.”

What is Podcasting?

The word “podcast” is a concatenation of the words iPod and broadcast. The underlying technology used for podcasts, called RSS (Really Simple Syndication), is capable of containing any type of media, including audio, video, graphics, and more.

“Podcasting” is a way of publishing podcasts to the web, allowing people to subscribe to a podcast and receive new “episodes” automatically through an RSS feed. Podcasting consists of publishing XML files, which contain references to media (called “enclosures”) on a website. Podcast aggregators (often called “podcatchers”), then read these XML files and download all the linked enclosures.

Unlike terrestrial and Internet radio, podcasts are time-shifted, meaning that listeners have control over when and where they hear their favorite programming. And, the episodes are delivered automatically to subscribers on iTunes, so the latest updates are always readily available with no effort required by the listener.

Podcasts offer iTunes users and iPod owners the same freedom and level of control they are familiar with when listening to their own music collections.

    XML
  3. If the podcaster's feed is being redirected to Feedburner, then you will be taken to a screen like that below. In this case, copy the text in the box below “Tune in Now.” So below, you would be copying “http://www.podcast411.com/feed.xml” same as above.
  4. Follow the instructions from your favorite Podcatching Software (i.e. iPodder, iPodderX, Primetime, ...) for adding the feed (URL) to the list of Podcasts you are subscribed to.
    iPodder X

Your computer will now automatically download new podcasts when they become available from the podcaster.

  5. How do you “Play a podcast? Now that the Podcatching software is checking the RSS Feed, the computer automatically downloads the audio file, but where to? To iTunes, or does it just start streaming?”

After the MP3 file (Podcast) is downloaded to the Podcatching Software - it is then automatically transfered to iTunes. There is no streaming with Podcasts. Podcasting was created to get away from Streaming. Streaming - by definition - is playing an audio / video file as it downloads from the net -- Podcasting is fully downloading the file in the background before transferring it to a program (usually iTunes) where it can be played at the leisure of the listener.
